If you’re using MenuCoster you would have already noticed the large change in poultry prices. We were forewarned of this by the poultry industry and this has come as no surprise. The price rise is due to increased prices for Australian grain (up 80%) because of drought. Some producers are sourcing grain from the Northern Hemisphere and therefore paying more.

In February 2007, higher prices were recorded for the meat, poultry and fish (up 1.7 percent); restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food (up 0.4 percent); grocery food (up 0.2 percent) and non-alcoholic beverages (up 0.4 percent) subgroups. Fruit and vegetables fell 2.6 percent in February 2007.

The most significant individual upward contributions came from higher prices for poultry (up 7.1%) and tomatoes (up 19.2%). The most significant downward contributions came from lower prices for apples (down 26.7%) and chocolate (down 3.3 percent).
